Hypersthene Schiller: How to Tell Real Hypersthene From Look-Alike Black Stones

Held still, a hypersthene bracelet reads as plain dark stone. Tilt it towards a window and something else appears — a soft silver-grey band that slides across the surface of each bead as the light finds it. That sheen is called schiller, and it is the single most reliable thing to look for when you are trying to work out whether a black bead is really hypersthene. This guide walks you through what the stone is, what causes the schiller, the stones most often confused with it, and how to judge a piece before you buy.
What Is Hypersthene?
Hypersthene is an orthopyroxene — a magnesium-iron silicate that sits in the series between enstatite and ferrosilite. Worth knowing: the International Mineralogical Association retired hypersthene as a formal species name in 1988, so a strict mineralogist would call the material ferroan enstatite. The trade name has stayed in use everywhere else, and it is the name you will see on almost every bracelet.
It measures roughly 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, which is softer than quartz. The body colour runs from brownish black to a deep greenish grey, and it is opaque throughout. Most beaded material on the market comes from India, with further deposits in Canada, Greenland and Norway.
What Schiller Actually Is
Schiller, from the German for shimmer, is not colour in the ordinary sense. As the mineral cooled it separated out microscopic plates of other material — usually iron-titanium oxides — which settled in parallel layers inside the crystal. Light entering the stone reflects off those aligned plates all at once, and the eye reads the result as a single sheet of light floating just below the surface.
Because the plates are aligned, the effect is directional. Rotate a hypersthene bead and the sheen appears, travels across the curve, and disappears. In hypersthene it is characteristically silver-grey, sometimes warming to bronze or a faint copper. It is not iridescent and it is not rainbow-coloured, and that narrow colour range is your first filter.
Properties in the Crystal Tradition

The Common Look-Alikes
Sheen obsidian is the closest impostor. Its silver or gold sheen comes from aligned gas bubbles rather than mineral plates, and it tends to sit as a broad velvety wash over the whole bead rather than a defined moving band. Obsidian is glass, so it feels warmer in the hand and often shows tiny bubbles under a loupe.
Black tourmaline has no sheen at all. It is jet black, with fine lengthwise striations along the original crystal, and at Mohs 7 it is noticeably harder.
Labradorite flashes blue, green and gold — spectral colours that hypersthene does not produce. Nuummite flashes too, but in scattered multicoloured needles rather than one sheet.
Dyed black onyx is flat, uniform and glassy, with no internal movement whatsoever. Glass and resin imitations warm quickly against the skin, may show a mould seam near the drill hole, and repeat their pattern identically bead to bead.
How to Choose a Quality Piece
1. Test the sheen under directional light
Take the bracelet to a window or a single lamp and turn it slowly. Genuine schiller moves; a printed or coated sparkle stays put. Diffuse overhead lighting will hide the effect entirely, which is why so much hypersthene looks disappointing in a shop and comes alive at home.
2. Accept that not every bead will flash
On a natural strand the plates are aligned differently in each bead, so only some catch the light at any one angle. A strand where every bead flashes identically at once is a warning sign, not a mark of quality.
3. Look for depth rather than glitter
Better material shows a broad, coherent sheet of light with a soft edge. Weaker material gives a patchy scatter. Hold the bead against a dark background — the sheen reads far more clearly than it does against white.
4. Check the drilling and the cord
Look for clean, centred holes without chipping around the rim, and beads that sit flush against one another. Ask what cord has been used and whether restringing is offered — a well-made bracelet is meant to be maintained, not replaced.
Caring for Your Hypersthene
- Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after wearing, or rest the piece on a selenite slab overnight.
- Keep it away from prolonged soaking. At Mohs 5 to 6 the stone is soft enough that water sitting in the drill holes will weaken the cord long before it troubles the beads.
- Put it on last. Perfume, hairspray and hand lotion dull the polish, and it is that polish the schiller depends on.
- Store it separately. Quartz, tourmaline and onyx are all harder and will scuff hypersthene if they share a dish.
- Remove it for washing up, swimming and the gym, as you would with any strung piece.
